Have a Green Christmas – Letter to Evening Gazette 28th December 2001 (published 2/1/2002)

This Christmas British families will create over 3 million tonnes of festive waste of which more than half could be recycled but almost 90% will be thrown away.

It is estimated that our christmas waste will include 1 billion christmas cards, 6 million trees, 4200 tonnes of aluminium foil, 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging and thousands of tonnes of old clothes and textiles.

However in Colchester we can help reduce this mountain of christmas waste by making use of the councils recycling schemes for all our cans, bottles and paper and giving all our unwanted presents and old clothes to local charity shops.

In addition you can recycle your old christmas cards through the recycling bins that will be available at branches of W H Smith and Tesco’s from the 3rd of January.

Finally we will be collecting christmas cards, old batteries, used stamps, corks, clean foil and perforated bottle tops (the type used on beer bottles) at the En-form office in Church Walk off Head Street, Colchester.

To make it easy why not set up a collection point for these items at your school, local shop or work place and drop them into us in one go.

For more information on other items that can be recycled throughout the year in Colchester please call in and see us or check out our recycling pages on the website at www.en-form.org.uk

Wind Turbine Debate Letter to Evening Gazette 4th December 2001

The recent debate on the possibility of Colchester obtaining a wind turbine as reported in the Evening Gazette recently is very welcome.

Although there are a number of arguments for and against turbines it is an idea worthy of further consideration.

It would appear to be an attractive option if Colchester could generate a proportion of its energy needs economically using wind turbines on land at industrial parks for example.

With major redevelopment plans throughout the town including those at the Hythe, the Garrison and Cuckoo Farm now is the ideal time to consider this idea.

As a first step I would suggest that those interested in this proposal should visit the wind turbine at the Ecotech Centre at Swaffham. This turbine includes a viewing platform, which is a useful tourist attraction, is set in an environmental park and can generate up to half of Swaffhams energy needs.

If anybody is interested in visiting the Centre to include a trip to the top of the turbine, let us know at En-form and we will try to arrange a visit.

We would also be interested in the views of the people of Colchester on this issue and will be conducting a poll at our centre in Church Walk and on our website www.en-form.org.uk
